Therapy

I love Fridays! And it’s not for the reason you think… Yes, I look forward to the weekend. Yes, it’s our lighter day of school. But most of all, Josiah has absolutely NO therapy on Friday.

Josiah has had occupational and physical therapy since after his surgery. He had speech four or five times after surgery, but he was doing so well in that area, it was discontinued. He will be starting up with speech therapy again this coming Monday. Vision therapy was added a few months after surgery, and most recently he has added another type of vision therapy called Orientation and Mobility.

Here is Josiah’s current therapy schedule:

Monday:
30 minutes Speech Therapy
30 minutes Occupational Therapy

Tuesday:
45 minutes Occupational Therapy

Wednesday:
45 minutes Physical Therapy
30 minutes Occupational Therapy
30 minutes Orientation and Mobility (Twice a month)

Thursday:
45 minutes Occupational Therapy
30 minutes Vision Therapy

All but vision therapy are now in town instead of in our home, so it’s not nearly as convenient as it has been years prior. Josiah seems to enjoy therapy now, and will happily go back with the therapist while I wait in the waiting area. It took him quite a while to get to that point though. I’m pretty sure it was over this past summer when he started being okay with going back by himself.

Nathan is a numbers type of guy, and he was interested to know how many therapies Josiah’s had since coming home from the hospital. I did my best to calculate, but I noticed some appointments were not included in my “search” of my calendar for one reason or another. But here is an approximate number of visits.

~ 100 Occupational Therapy visits
~ 70 Physical Therapy visits
~ 40 Vision Therapy visits
~ 20 Physical/Occupational therapy combination visits
~ 15 Orientation and Mobility visits

Nathan did a few quick calculations, and came up with 8,850 minutes of therapy, which is almost 150 hours! That’s a lot of numbers! 🙂

We have really seen a lot of progress over the last 6 months or so. It’s so great to see Josiah use his right arm to assist with a variety of tasks. We’re thankful for the Botox shots that help keep his arm from getting too tight.

He’s still not a fan of the splints and braces he needs to wear in order to keep the arm stretched out, and it’s really hard for me to force him to wear them. It’s even harder to keep him in them, as he’s figured out how to take most of them off himself. Some days are better than others, and we just do the best we can.

therapy2When Josiah was in the hospital, the doctors said his siblings would be his best therapy.  That was absolutely true! He does his best to keep up with the older three kids, and really doesn’t get too far behind! He did so well at home that he didn’t have to return to the hospital for inpatient therapy.  I am so thankful!  I’ll end with how Josiah’s therapy sessions used to end…
